آنتونی ادوارد استارک یا به اختصار ملقب به تونی استارک، میلیاردری عیاش، صنعت‌گر و مهندسی نابغه، از یک جراحتی در سینه‌اش که در زمان اسارتش ایجاد شده‌است رنج می‌برد. وی توسط گروهی عرب در افغانستان گروگان گرفته شده و از او خواسته می‌شود در برابر آزادیش برای آن‌ها سلاح کشتار جمعی یا موشک بسازد. تونی به جای این کار، زرهی قدرتمند برای خود می‌سازد تا از اسارت فرار کند. بعدها او از این زره استفاده می‌کند تا از زمین و انسان‌هایی بی‌گناه محافظت کند.
